COAST SALISH ARTIST
Kelly is an interdisciplinary artist from the Musqueam Nation. Her work pulls from traditional Coast Salish themes and can be seen publicly throughout Vancouver, Canada.
ON HER NATION:
I am a descendant of the Musqueam peoples. We are proud, generous people. Since time immemorial, we have been guardians of the beautiful and resourceful territory along the Fraser River and coast of the Salish Sea, which is now known as Metro Vancouver.
“It’s a new perspective, which is what I always hope to project through my artwork.”
“This is how my peoples’ history has been told through art, and I hope to continue sharing this way for years to come for my children and their children.”
ON THE IMPORTANCE OF CREATING ART:
Art has been the foundation of my being since birth. I come from a family of incredible artists. Understanding the role it has played in my life has made me who I am. It’s my way of giving back to my community, my ancestors and Mother Earth. I create my artwork to share stories, legends, and to bring awareness to our ever-changing environment. This is how my peoples’ history has been told through art, and I hope to continue sharing this way for years to come for my children and their children.
ON THE ROLE OF FAMILY:
My mother, Susan Point, ensured that I grew up with cultural teachings and knowledge. From that point on, I have been inspired by her and worked closely by her side. Both of my brothers are artists as well. We’re fortunate to be able to work together and help each other with new ideas. This brings our artwork to higher levels and new audiences.
