Ash Foo

Model + Survivor + Activist
Brooklyn, USA

Ash lives in Brooklyn, NY with her dog, Ziggy. In June 2019, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and spent the last year undergoing chemotherapy. Ash is currently in remission and has since returned to fashion and modeling, raising awareness about the disease that impacts 21,000 women in the US each year.

There were many things that I learned throughout my journey with cancer. Most importantly would be, to never take your health for granted. As a young person, and like many others in their early 20s, I thought of myself as invincible. There's a common misconception that illness and diseases impact people more elderly. But illnesses do not discriminate.
It’s so important to listen to your body. Your body wants you to be healthy and well, and will inform you if you’re not. We tend to push through our discomforts, in order to prioritize other daily tasks or work, ignoring signs and signals that could potentially prevent serious illnesses. Don’t wait until it’s too late.

“Show up every day with genuine unconditional love.”

I’ve definitely experienced some very low moments during my treatment. There were many moments where it felt my life was completely out of my own hands. And admittedly, I had days where I had no motivation to even get out of bed. If there was one thing that helped me the most, it was having an amazing support system. People who will not judge or criticize you, but show up every day with genuine unconditional love. They helped me to bring my awareness and focus back to a healthier place, also providing comfort and peace with knowing I’m not alone. As humans, we need social connections to thrive. Having a strong emotional and social support system can have an immensely positive impact on our health.

“Beauty is embracing and accepting that our flaws and imperfections are what make us who we are.”

“My message for other women is that you don’t have to be perfect to be beautiful. Perfection doesn’t exist.”

I truly believe that beauty is embracing and accepting that our flaws and imperfections are what make us who we are. Working as a model, I’ve always felt a constant pressure to look a certain way. And after my body went through what it did, I couldn’t hold myself to those unrealistic expectations anymore.
I have multiple large scars on my lower abdomen from my surgeries, and dark hyperpigmentation marks all over my body that were a side effect from the chemotherapy. And now I rock brand new hair (a pixie cut that I love). Loving every bit of yourself can be very empowering. Seeing your flaws as a statement of uniqueness, character and identity is a beautiful thing.
